Valley House resident celebrates 102 years

One of our wonderful Valley House residents celebrated a pretty momentous birthday this week – Janette Still Smith is now an impressive 102! On Tuesday, Oct. 21, her fellow residents, staff and family threw a celebration in her honor, complete with music and cake.

Janette moved from Tulsa, Okla. to Valley House in May of this year. She was born in McCurtain County, Okla. in 1912 where she grew up on her family’s farm with five siblings. She loved spending time outdoors – some of her favorite pastimes were climbing trees and riding the plow horse. In 1937, she graduated with a degree in home economics from Oklahoma State University – named Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College back then. She married Cecil O. Smith in 1940 and they raised their family in Oklahoma.

As you might have guessed, her friends often ask about her secret to aging well. She usually answers that it’s by the grace of God that she has lived this long, but sometimes she’ll add that picking cotton and playing outside as a child didn’t hurt her health – while she might never have worn shoes, she always wore a sun bonnet! Janette is such a wonderful and vibrant person, and a true inspiration. We’re so happy to have her here!
